The camp Gestapo barrack was located here during the existence
of Auschwitz concentration camp. Prisoners suspected of involvement
in the camp resistance movement or of preparing to escape were
interrogated here. Prisoners were beaten and sadistically tortured
during these interrogations, which often lasted for hours. Many
of them died.
The founder and first Commandant of Auschwitz concentration camp,
SS-Obersturmbannführer Rudolf Höss, was hanged here on April 16,
1947, after being sentenced to death by the Polish Supreme National
Tribunal.
