This block contains an exhibition that presents the two basic
functions of Auschwitz Concentration Camp: as a concentration
camp for prisoners of various nationalities and as the largest
center for the mass destruction of the European Jews. Documents
illustrating who the victims were and where they were deported
from are on display. Most of the exhibition rooms in this block
illustrate the process of the destruction of the Jews, from their
arrival on the ramp through the selection conducted by SS physicians,
to the road to death in the gas chambers. A model of the gas chamber
and
crematorium is shown here, as well as one of the most shocking proofs of
the crimes against humanity: almost two tons of hair shorn from
the victims of the camp and discovered in 1945.
